On Resources: My Rationale Explained

How You Can Control Behavior In The Classroom

Poor study skills and inappropriate classroom behavior are some of the things you have to deal with when you are a teacher. Most kids go through behavioral issues, and it is part of growing up. For some, it is more severe than others. This behavior is what distinguishes the individual kids from the regular ones. Let’s look at several ways you can manage classroom behavior.

Come up with behavioral expectations and tell it to them. At the start of every school year tell the students what you expect. As from the first day of school come up with rules that will guide the class. Go through the rules together with the students and make it a tradition in the classroom. The rules should be accompanied by signs that will be used to warn someone who is making a mistake. Monitor the students to see if they are following the rules.

Inform them of their behavior after you have monitored it for some time. If you have a student who is continuously having lousy behavior keep a close eye on them and also avoid it at an early stage. If someone has inappropriate practice make sure you respond using gestures and words that are firm so show that they are not following the rules. Rewarding ethical behavior is something you should always do in a classroom.

The practices will be followed if you reinforce then using social, edible, negative, tangible and activity reinforcement. Instead of appreciating good behavior with physical reward one could use tokens. For a later day the tokens can be used as backup reinforcement. But if you are dealing with older students the best reinforce using contingency contracts. The contract is made by both you and the student stating that they will get a particular reward for good behavior. Shaping is a word used to explain a method used to teaching good behavior in tiny bits. Existing, as well as new behaviors, can be taught using shaping.

Use a role model to explain the sort of behavior you are expecting. When one of the does something good use them to teach the others how they should behave. If you are working on a specific student make sure you students their age are around to listen and learn what are your expectations. This way you will be meeting on both sides. The students should be part of coming up with a behavioral program, for example, making the goals, being responsible of themselves not to make mistakes, doing a personal evaluation of how they have behaved and the reward they should get. The behavior management program should also include the parents.
